Japanese Students
utgers is historically
important as the first American college in which Japanese students enrolled during the Japanese modernizing period that
followed the Meiji restoration in the late 1860s. A few Reformed Church missionaries to Japan had provided the
initial contacts. In this photo taken in 1870 for Professor and Mrs. David Murray, who later went to Japan as educators,
an early group of Japanese students have westernized their apparel remarkably faithfully.
