In 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played the first game of intercollegiate football on a New Brunswick field overlooking the Raritan. For the record, Rutgers came out victorious, by a score of 6 to 4. The current Rutgers gym, one of 14 state-of-the-art competitive and training facilities, now occupies that field.

The tradition that started then continues today. From football to softball, wrestling to lacrosse, close to 1,000 Rutgers men and women actively participate in the university's sports programs.

Rutgers–New Brunswick’s women's basketball (2007 NCAA finalist and BIG EAST champions, 2006 and 2005 BIG EAST regular-season champions), women’s soccer (2006 NCAA Second Round and BIG EAST Tournament finalists), football (2006 Texas Bowl champions), baseball (2007 BIG EAST champions and NCAA First Round), and Rutgers–Camden’s women’s softball (2007 NCAA Division III Second Round and NJAC champions, 2006 NCAA Division III champions and NJAC champions) are perennial conference and national standouts.
